The importance of establishing a green economy and maintaining sustainable growth for the region were key subjects under discussion at the Arabia CSR Network (ACSRN)’s Awards Forum, which was held last night at Grosvenor House, Dubai.
Titled: ‘Green and Inclusive Economy: Building a Sustainable Future,’ the event was held under the auspices of H.E Mohammed At-Twajir, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Affairs for the League of Arab States and Ms Habiba Al Marashi, President and CEO, ACSRN. It brought together leading International CSR experts and sustainability thinkers to discuss ways of transitioning to a sustainable future through private sector engagement, market instruments and collaboration.
“The ACSRN Awards Forum marked an important new benchmark in ACSRN’s history as it is the first ever regional platform to be supported at the highest levels both internationally and locally, by the UN Global Compact and the League of Arab States. The symposium had the desired effect of stimulating debate on the major developments in the area and we were honoured to have such distinguished expert guests who shared their time with us to discuss the most recent sustainability trends and the emerging issues affecting the Arab world,” said Mrs. Habiba Al Marashi, President and CEO, ACSRN.
Among those speaking at last night’s Arabia CSR Awards Forum was Dr. Mohammed bin Ibrahim At-Twaijri and Dr. Iyad Abu Moghli, Regional Director and Representative for the UNEP Regional Office for West Asia, both of whom gave key note presentations relating to sustainability developments in the region and the main issues affecting green growth in this area.
Following the lead addresses, the symposium split in to four plenary sessions, each of which included a number of additional speakers. Among the topics addressed at the sessions were the requirements for behavioural change from both governments and corporations, with regulations needing to have a primary focus on the environment, not the economy. The ‘Triple P’ approach of ‘People, Planet Profit’ was highlighted as the bottom line, with the need for a better discourse between the generations and the use of a common language across industry sectors also discussed. Transparency and disclosure were also key subjects that were broached during the sessions.
The Arabia CSR Awards programme is the only scheme in the region to be supported by the United Nations Global Compact. It is also the first to reach out to private companies, public departments and civil society organisations across the region, making it the most credible and prestigious CSR accolades scheme in the Arab world.
